Winter As the Montgomery Canal has such clean, clear relatively shallow water, it's pretty easy to see Perch and other fish. Why not look down from one of the bridges or just sit quietly and watch the water?
A familiar sight in lowland waterbodies and waterways across the UK, like the Montgomery Canal, the Perch is a beautiful fish. Greenish in colour, it has striking tiger-like stripes, red-orange fins and a characteristic humped back.
This predator feeds on invertebrates, crayfish and other fish and is often seen in shoals.
In April spawning takes place and the female produces sticky bands of eggs which she wraps around rocks and vegetation ready for the male to fertilise them. The young hatch after three weeks.
This greenish-coloured fish is medium-sized with pronounced dark, tiger stripes, a large, spiny dorsal fin, red pectoral and anal fins, and a red tail.
